This year, puffins have made an early return to Reykjavík, with sightings recorded as early as 26 March 2025 - several weeks ahead of their usual mid-April arrival. While it’s not unheard of for a few individuals to show up early, this year’s early appearance of multiple birds suggests that conditions may be favourable for an earlier start to the breeding season.
Whether it's a response to changing sea temperatures or simply a fluke of timing, it's an exciting development for puffin enthusiasts and birdwatchers in the area. While our puffin tours are scheduled to start on 20 April 2025, we might even begin a little earlier if enough birds are settled on the islands in the coming days..
Keep an eye out - the puffins are here to stay (for now)!
